Abstract
vThis study aims at making a clear distinction between two types of poetic imagery, called the ĥissî (sensory) and the dhihnî or ma‘nawî (intellectual), and at creating categorizations for each type, depending on two aspects: the nature of the two parts that are compared in a poetic image, as well as the nature of the point of similarity in the same image. The study is benefiting from the deep theorization of the new-old critic named ‘Abd Al-Qahir Al-Jurjānî, specially his comments on the nature of poetic imagery and the relationship between its two parts . In the context of the new movement that witnessed in Abbasid era, Ibn al-Mu‘tazz considered to be the pioneer of ĥissî (sensory) type, whereas Abû Tammām is the pioneer dhihnî (intellectual) type. Through collecting and canalizing examples from Ibn al-Mu‘tazz's poetry, this study examined the above mentioned result, with special concentrating on ĥissî (sensory) type, and IB's fond for dealing with images that involve opposite movements, as well as his distinguish use of color .
