Abstract

Abstract: The study aimed to determine the extent of the success of punitive measures in promoting classroom discipline in basic education schools in Mukalla, the researcher used the descriptive approach and questionnaire as a tool for data collection. The study community consisted of principals of schools and their agents and teachers of basic education schools in Mukalla, which is of (1670) individuals. A random sample was taken from (180) individuals from the study population. The results were as follows: The most important findings was the confirmation of the success of using corporal punishment, especially the method of beating, when a student exhibits a behavior that intends bad manners, violence, and intentional assault on others, or the use of obscene or racist words, as well as when ethical violations or brings forbidden which are behaviors that is denied by school as well as society, but teachers and school administration often adhere to school regulations. The success of using methods of corporal punishment such as cleaning the class as a punishment for behaviors that are predominantly reckless and indifferent, and the method of standing in class or in line used as physical and moral punishment for types of behaviors that is wanted to be changed or may require some kind of alert. However, the punishment methods like continues movements and commission of additional assignments were having weak indicators, due to ineffectiveness as the sample members seen. In the term of moral punishment, the statistical indications of the methods of calling the student's guardian or the method of recommending the dismissal was high as punishment for dangerous and complex behaviors and when they are considered as a source of change for other or a measure to prevent spread of specific behavior that may not benefit traditional methods or not expected to change it easily, so they may return the discipline to the guardian as a moral punishment or to be disciplined out of school. Moreover, the confiscation of the examination paper was only highly indicative in cheating conditions. The use of physical punishment has high statistical indications in cases where cessation or extinction a behavior is desirable.
