Abstract

This study aims at identifying the levels and potential causes of anxiety in speaking English as a foreign language among Yemeni female students. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher adopted the Horwitz et al’s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and distributed it to 31 female English students at an English department at Hadramout University, Yemen. Generally, the study found that the majority of the respondents scored “average” level of anxiety in speaking English. Additionally, a number of causes affected on provoking their general anxiety with fear of negative evaluation. Finally, the study presented a set of recommendations for the professors, curricula designers and developers, and English learners.
