Abstract

The researcher recorded some typical teaching methods in the university regarding them as traditional methods that insist on the reproduction of what is common and what has already been available. As a result of these traditional methods of teaching the students are taught traditional ways of thinking and understanding which they can not avoid even after being graduated. Such traditional methods of teaching are too weak and old to produce an elite capable of exploring the present and the future. The researcher recommended resisting traditionalism in the university teaching so as to overcome this bad situation our graduates suffer a lot from. This desire to resist traditionalism has already been recommended by our great scholars and philosophers such as Al-Ghazali, Ibn Khaldun and Zaki Naguib Mahmood whose popularity and fame are attributed mostly to their tendencies to reject traditionalism. The researcher thinks that these typical traditional methods of teaching used in the university represent a hindrance in accepting the modern methods and techniques and as a result of that the researcher criticized those methods and provided alternative methods that may help our student to grasp and understand the modern sciences and knowledge. The researcher thinks that the idea of learning and getting benefits from the others who have traditions and religions differ from ours, is strongly supported and called for in our history and heritage. The researcher also called for respecting and supporting the social sciences as it is impossible for us to have a democratic civil society without such sciences.
