Towards a Renewable Energy Management and Protection Algorithm for Smart Home

Abstract

Today, some people are seeking to live in   smart homes for more prosperous life. Due to the new dimensions and rapid growth of information technology, electronic devices connected to the Internet have been used in the smart home environment by using Internet of things technologies, the home  are smarter  to improve the protection of the smart home and provide comfort and energy efficiency.

The smart home environment needs a special system consisting of software algorithms, sensors, network connections, hardware elements and others that cooperate with each other to provide a variety of services to users. In the context of smart networks, renewable energy resources have become more popular, because they are the preferred resources for many homeowners to use in their homes today.

However, Home Energy Management (HEM) algorithm is one of the most algorithms that is used to manage and store the renewable energy, yet it does not care about security issue. Therefore, this paper aims to enhance the HEM algorithm address this problem. As a result, we propose a renewable energy management and protection algorithm (REMP) that integrates the modified HEM algorithm and the energy theft detection technology.

  1. Introduction

Energy is the main cause of climate change, pollution and human health, because its origin heavily depends on coal, oil and natural gas, and it is certainly destroying our planet. The growth in energy demand will grow with the emission of carbon dioxide so it was necessary to provide a model for the development and production of energy based on clean technology and renewable energy sources. Renewable energy is energy derived from natural resources, which is renewed or that is inexhaustible   and does not emit harmful gases. This is includes solar energy, hydropower, wind power among others.

 Due to the continuous decline in fossil fuel resources and its impacts on the climate, renewable energy sources have provided alternative sources of energy to be sustainable and environmentally friendly [ 1 ].

The world is competing today for energy resources and management. For example, Japan and China have established huge projects for renewable energy management. As a matter of fact, the demand of energy is increasing gradually, thus technology should be involved as a tool for solving this problem. Electrical distribution systems have been developed using smart networks and the use of renewable energy sources has been expanded due to the development of new communications and innovative information technology.

From smart home perspective, smart homes require very strict security requirements. Given the importance of  private  information  in smart home environment, the majority of smart home appliances are designed  to work with  low-power , energy and low-volume  computing  that  restrict their capabilities, performance, and storage. Devices in a smart home can be left unchecked all the time and thus physical access to them is available and becomes easy targets for tampering with attacks [2].

Internet of Thing (IoT) technology consists of a network system containing software, electronic devices, networks and sensors. Sensors are connected to each other to make the Internet system of things able to provide multiple services to users and thus make the system more efficient and valuable [ 3 ] .

All of smart home of IoT applications are energy consumer electronic devices. These devices are connected to each other through network technologies to build up a heterogeneous distributed system, which called a smart home system. Networks of these devices must provide new benefits and services of the population. The smart home appliances must be equipped with the main functions with capabilities of the network to create a single environment, and the infrastructure is located in the base or station inside the home [4]

Smart home technology possesses the features of modern technology and huge developments, thus it attracts a lot of commercial companies, especially electrical and electronic companies, hardware and software vendors, such as global companies Samsung, Google, Apple and non-commercial entities such as government institutions, and end users [5]. One of the main problems that stand on the way of advancing smart home in the context of information technology is stealing the energy by electronic attacks. Therefore, this paper aims to modify HEM algorithm to solve the aforementioned problem.
